Transalpina tour from Bucharest

Romania's highest road — raw alpine wilderness at 2,145m

The Transalpina (DN67C) climbs to 2,145m — higher than the Transfagarasan — through the wild Parang Mountains in western Romania. Built originally as a Roman military road and later upgraded under King Carol II in the 1930s, the Transalpina is less commercialized than the Transfagarasan, offering a more authentic and solitary mountain experience.

The road passes through alpine meadows, past glacial lakes and through villages that feel unchanged by time. The views from the Urdele Pass at the top are among the most spectacular in Romania. This is a trip for those who want dramatic scenery without the tourist crowds.

  • Urdele Pass at 2,145m — Romania's highest paved road point
  • Rânca mountain resort — good base for the ascent
  • Oașa Lake — stunning reservoir surrounded by mountains
  • Novaci village — traditional Wallachian community
  • Alpine meadows and endemic flora
  • Virtually no tourist crowds compared to Transfagarasan
  • Can combine with Cozia Monastery or Horezu Pottery Village
  • Road open approximately late June to late October

Frequently asked questions

Both are spectacular Romanian mountain roads but differ in character. The Transfagarasan (2,042m) is more famous internationally, has more tourist infrastructure and passes Balea Lake and Poienari Castle. The Transalpina (2,145m) is higher, wilder, less crowded and feels more off-the-beaten-path. Both are unforgettable.
The Transalpina is typically open from late June to October, weather permitting. The high section above Rânca closes in winter due to snow. We always verify current road conditions before confirming your booking.
