Romania's highest road at 2,145m — raw, untouched alpine scenery through the Parang Mountains. Less crowded than the Transfagarasan and arguably even more dramatic.
About this trip
The Transalpina (DN67C) climbs to 2,145m — higher than the Transfagarasan — through the wild Parang Mountains in western Romania. Built originally as a Roman military road and later upgraded under King Carol II in the 1930s, the Transalpina is less commercialized than the Transfagarasan, offering a more authentic and solitary mountain experience.
The road passes through alpine meadows, past glacial lakes and through villages that feel unchanged by time. The views from the Urdele Pass at the top are among the most spectacular in Romania. This is a trip for those who want dramatic scenery without the tourist crowds.
