Romania's most important historic city — the magnificent 18th-century star fortress where Romania was unified in 1918.
About this trip
Alba Iulia (Apulum to the Romans) is one of Romania's most historically significant cities. Its 18th-century Vauban-style star fortress, the Carolina Citadel, is among the best-preserved in Europe, with seven spectacular baroque gates.
On December 1, 1918, the Great National Assembly met here and voted for the unification of Transylvania with Romania — still celebrated as Romania's National Day. The city also holds Roman ruins, a magnificent Gothic cathedral and 2,000 years of layered history.
