The greatest outdoor sculptural ensemble of the 20th century — Brâncuși's masterwork in Târgu Jiu.
About this trip
Constantin Brâncuși (1876–1957) is Romania's greatest sculptor and one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. The Monumental Ensemble in Târgu Jiu — created in 1937–1938 as a tribute to the heroes of World War I — is his largest and most ambitious work.
The ensemble consists of three major sculptures aligned on a symbolic axis: the Table of Silence (a round table with 12 hourglass seats), the Gate of the Kiss (a stone arch decorated with the kiss motif), and the Endless Column (a 29.35m cast-iron column symbolizing infinite sacrifice). It is considered one of the greatest works of art in the world.
