The world's best-preserved inhabited medieval citadel — a UNESCO World Heritage site and the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, the historical inspiration for Count Dracula.
About this trip
Sighișoara (Schäßburg in German) is one of Europe's great medieval treasures. Founded by Saxon settlers in the 12th century, the hilltop citadel is remarkably intact — its towers, cobblestone lanes, colourful merchant houses and Gothic church have changed little since the Middle Ages.
Sighișoara is also famous as the birthplace of Vlad III — Vlad the Impaler, the historical inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula. His birth house still stands in the citadel square, now a restaurant. The Clock Tower offers panoramic views of the medieval rooftops and Transylvanian countryside beyond.
