Transylvania's most dramatic hilltop fortress
Cetatea Deva (Deva Fortress) sits dramatically atop a volcanic hill 371m above the city of Deva, offering spectacular 360° views of the Mureș River valley and the Transylvanian mountains. Dating from the 13th century, it was one of Transylvania's most important medieval fortifications.
A cable car takes visitors to the top (or you can hike). The partially ruined fortress still conveys immense power. The city of Deva below is pleasant to explore, and the fortress pairs perfectly with a visit to nearby Corvin Castle in Hunedoara.
